About 70% of dance professionals in Scotland are estimated to be female. Historically, however, the presence of women in dance is relatively new. Until the early twentieth century, male performers and dance teachers were more common.

The display ‘Women in Dance in Scotland from 1500s to 1800s’ looks at the history of women’s involvement in dance in Scotland from the early sixteenth century to the eighteenth century. During this period, the role of women in dance was both restricted and transformative.

The evolution of women’s roles in the dance field throughout this time laid the groundwork for the modern dance world, where gender roles have become more fluid and opportunities for female dancers more expansive. The display is based on written accounts and traces women as dancers, patronesses, producers, dancing mistresses and performers in Edinburgh and beyond.

This lovely event is ticket only and tickets https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1203642098919  are limited.Women in Dance Dundee small_ flyer.jpg
